In morphology, we consider the processes by which new morphological elements are created from earlier independent words (morphologisation), and other processes of morphological development (analogy, exaptation, suppletion). Other approaches are specific to particular levels of linguistics. Still others look at the role of language use, emphasising, for instance, that inferences and metaphors become entrenched in a language over time, leading to change. symmetrical vowel systems or consistent word-order types) are favoured historically over others. Others have placed the emphasis on the structure of linguistic systems, arguing that certain types of system (e.g. Many linguists attribute language change to child language acquisition, the process by which each generation has to work out the grammar of its language anew. Possible explanations recur in the work of different linguists working in different areas. The focus of the course is on trying to explain why change arises, at whatever level we are considering. We consider both why a new linguistic form should appear in the speech of one individual in the first place, and why that innovation should spread to different linguistic contexts (words, constructions) and to different speakers. The attempts of various schools of linguists to describe, classify and explain these changes are surveyed, and the implications of change for linguistic theory in general are examined. The lectures illustrate the effects of change on all areas of language, illustrated using data from a wide range of languages. Although linguistics has since the early 20th century been a predominantly synchronic discipline, studying the structure of a language or languages at a specific point in time, this course reflects the view that linguistic systems cannot be completely understood from a purely synchronic perspective: instead, we should also concern ourselves with the ways in which such systems have arisen. One of the few things we can predict with confidence in the field of linguistics is that languages change, although not necessarily how or why such change occurs. A true random number generator receives information from these types of unpredictable events to produce a truly random number. Examples of such events are blips in atmospheric noise, or points at which a radioactive material decays. In other words, randomness from a computer program is not necessarily an organic, truly random event.Ī true random number generator (TRNG) relies on randomness from a physical event that is external to the computer and its operating system. These random number generators are pseudo-random because the computer program or algorithm may have unintended selection bias. Facts that emerged, after the war, confirmed that the French had indeed used hand-grenades (originally produced for the French gendarmerie) containing a tear gas - ethylbromacetate - on their sector of the Western Front. The Germans also accused the British of using similar gas projectiles at Ypres on 15 April. They categorically stated that even at the outbreak of war the French had 30,000 shells in their arsenal carrying a poisonous gas derived from bromine, and that in April 1915 the French Army had specifically launched projectiles containing poisonous gas on the German sectors in Champagne, Verdun, the Meuse/Moselle rivers and Ypres between 13 and 15 April 1915. The Germans were particularly emphatic about the use of war gases. This was in clear contravention of the 1899 Hague Convention on this subject. In early 1915, accounts were freely circulated in turn by the French, British and Germans that poisonous gas was being used as a weapon of war by their opponents on the Western Front. Howler monkeys are an iconic feature of the Amazon rainforest, where they live high up in the canopy and their calls can be heard most mornings. Howler monkeys are some of the biggest monkeys in the New World, and the Guatemalan howler monkey is the biggest of all. Guatemalan howler monkeys are one of the biggest in the New World They spend most of their time in the top canopy of the forest, where they eat leaves, fruits, flowers, and nuts. They are the only monkeys in the New World that primarily eat leaves They have highly sensitive noses that are adapted for them to be able to find ripe fruit.ġ0. Their strong prehensile tails can be very long, in some cases 5 times the length of their body. Their tails can be up to 5 times the length of their body This allows them to feel with their tails in the same way they do with their hands. The tail of a howler monkey can support its entire body weight. It can help them hang from branches or grab fruit from trees. This means their tail can essentially act like another hand. Howler monkeys are very territorial, so they don’t want anyone else coming into their patch. Males most likely make this loud call to ward off potential competitors. Only male howler monkeys “howl”įemales never make these loud calls. This is called the hyoid bone which helps them make their calls especially loud. They have a special bone in their throat which amplifies their calls Their call can be heard echoing throughout the forest from as far away as 5km (3 miles). They are widely considered as one of the loudest land mammals This sound is low, guttural and quite scary when heard in the rainforest. Their name comes from the howl-like sound they make They are well known for their “howl” which is a long haunting call which can be heard clearly from 5km away. In hindsight, I wish I had ordered the chicken feet and sparerib steamed rice. It’s nothing like the beef and pan fried egg rice that I get here at home. Certain herbs that I couldn’t quite pick out were included in the mix which gave it an odd taste and the texture was mushy and wet, like it wasn’t properly cooked. The biggest disappointment was the steamed rice with beef and pan fried egg. Everything tasted as it should, but nothing stood out as being exceptionally stellar. I had dim sum a couple days prior at another restaurant and portions there were significantly bigger. They wanted you to eat and then get out.įirst impressions of all the dishes were of how small everything seemed. Quickly bamboo steamers came flooding out of the kitchen onto our table. And the most important dish – the BBQ Pork Buns. A few not so classic items: spring rolls with shrimp and egg whites and steamed rice with beef and pan fried egg. We ordered a few classic items: ha gow (shrimp dumplings), sui mai (pork dumplings), rice rolls with beef, and sticky rice. There is also a per person tea fee which is normal. Dishes range in prices anywhere from $15 – $25 HKD. There is English on the menu, but you’re never too sure if the English translation is correct. The place mats on the table thankfully were full of photos and we were able to figure out exactly what we wanted to order. We were quickly seated and an ordering sheet thrust into our waiting hands. In fact, the restaurant was still half empty when we showed up. With reports of long lines stretching down the street, we woke up early and arrived at the restaurant just after opening at 8:30. Now the Sham Sui Po location is your only choice for a certified Michelin star meal. However in 2013, due to rent increases, the original Mongkok location closed. Demand quickly grew and the restaurant has since expanded to 4 other locations around the city and internationally in Singapore, the Philippines and has its eyes set on Australia in 2015. Diners were promised high quality dim sum at reasonable prices with dishes made in house and never frozen.įrom the get go, it was a success and it wasn’t before long it caught the eyes of the Michelin folk who awarded the restaurant its star in 2010. Tim Ho Wan, which literally translates to “add good luck”, was opened by the former dim sum chef of the Hong Kong Four Seasons hotel, Mak Kwai Pui, in 2009 with a small restaurant of 30 seats in Mongkok. I completely failed in taking a photo of the storefront! Photo: Robyn Lee She finds out that her Mark is all filled in, unusually for fledglings, but follows her intuition and doesn't mention the vision to Neferet. Zoey wakes up at the school in the presence of her grandmother and the vampyre headmaster – her future mentor, Neferet. The goddess leaves Zoey with the words "Darkness does not always equate to evil, Light does not always bring good" which becomes a very frequent and important message throughout the series. On the way, she passes out and has a vision with the vampyre goddess, Nyx, who announces to Zoey that she will be her "eyes and ears" at the House of Night. As fledglings need to be constantly in the presence of an adult vampyre so that their bodies won't reject the Change, Zoey flees to her grandmother Sylvia, a Cherokee Wise Woman. Her mother, Linda Heffer, blames her for the Mark and, together with her ultra-religious husband (Zoey's stepfather/step-loser), she tries to keep Zoey at home, to be presented to the Elders of the People of Faith, an anti-vampyre group. She gets stopped outside in the parking lot by her ex-boyfriend Heath and his friends, who call her a freak and drive away. One day, during school, Zoey is marked by a Tracker to become a fledgling vampyre at the Tulsa House of Night, a boarding school where she will be trained to become an adult vampyre. Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird lives in a world where vampires, or "vampyres" have always existed. The book has been translated into more than 20 languages including French, Spanish, German and Chinese. Young fledgling Zoey is unusual: unlike other normal fledglings, she bears a filled mark, a sign that the goddess of vampyres, Nyx, has bestowed a great destiny onto her, but she also has to deal with normal high school girl issues, like school, boyfriends and the evil popular girl waiting just around the corner. Those are sent to their local Houses of Night, private schools directed by vampyres, specialized in helping the adolescents, called fledglings, survive the Change. Young teenagers are selected to enter a four-year period transformation to a vampyre and marked with the unfilled mark of a crescent moon. All told, we estimate a seven-ton difference in carbon emissions between the residents of Manhattan’s urban aeries and the good burghers of Westchester County. The gap in emissions from home heating is almost three tons. The gap in electricity usage between New York City and its suburbs is also about two tons. But cars represent only one-third of the gap in carbon emissions between New Yorkers and their suburbanites. In New York and San Francisco, driving less accounted for a two-ton difference per family (the average American emits about 20 tons of CO2 annually). He and UCLA economist Matthew Kahn found that those living in urban centers emitted less carbon than those living in the 'burbs, partly because they tend to drive less. Writing this past March for The New York Times's Economix blog, Harvard urban economist Edward Glaeser remarked on a study that he coauthored of carbon emissions across different metropolitan areas in the US. But it turns out that these icons of industrialization, to the extent that they increase population density, tend to be far more energy efficient than suburban office parks. To many, the concept of a "green skyscraper" may seem like an oxymoron. The New York Times reports that money for the project will be raised from "private equity investment, grants, debt financing, and government funds."Īdditionally, the owners also are planning to build a 50-story luxury hotel next door, which would be powered entirely by energy generated by the skyscraper, whose name is slated to be changed to the Willis Tower this summer. The project will create 3,600 jobs, building officials said. The goal is to reduce the building's electricity consumption by 80 percent and save 24 million gallons of water each year. The $350 million, five-year project also includes plans to modernize the tower's 104 elevators, improve the insulation of the exterior walls, upgrade the plumbing, and even add more bike racks for commuters. Wind turbines, a solar water heater, and the world's highest green roof are just a few of the proposed improvements that the building's owners and architects announced Wednesday for the 110-story, 1,450-foot skyscraper. Chicago's Sears Tower – which, from 1974 to 1998, stood as the world's tallest building – is getting a green makeover. This video is for the 2017 model, but most of it is still relevant. Like most Flux bindings the TMs are smooth and easy to get in and out of. And this is potentially one of the reasons for the good board feel. But if shock absorption isn’t a big deal for you, then this isn’t a deal-breaker. They’re not the most shock absorbing – and that’s typical of Flux – and that’s one of the downsides of having that heel ramp adjustment there. You can adjust heel ramp and toe ramp (most brands only have a toe ramp adjustment) and pretty much every other adjustment you need – only downside is no ability to adjust the high back lean – not that I could see anyway. AdjustabilityĪnother strong point (there are a lot of them) for the TMs is their adjustability. Board Feel/Butterabilityĭespite being relatively stiff, and not having anything like a mini-disc or anything like that, they actual have really decent board feel – something that Flux tend to be able to manage across a lot of their line. Responsiveness is definitely the strength of these bindings. The TMs felt super responsive and really increased the response of the board I was riding, compared to the bindings I would usually ride on them. Though Flux rate them a 5/5 (which in my head would convert to a 10/10), I got more of a 8/10 feeling from them. Quite cold in the morning but got quite warm in the afternoon (it was spring after all, but you’d never have known it with the amount of snow around and the cold morning!) Snow conditions were a great mix of hard spots and soft-pack on the groomers and plenty of powder to be found off groomer, making it the perfect conditions for demoing – a bit of everything. Demo InfoĬonditions: Sunshine! And plenty of it. let’s take a more detailed look at what the TMs are capable of. large jumps) freestyle stuff, then the TMs could work for that too – but generally they’re stiffer than I would normally ride for freestyle – but definitely for backcountry, off-groomer and for bombing the groomers. If you like to bomb at speed but still want to feel the natural flex of your board underfoot, then the TMs are a great option.ĭefinitely not for the beginner – too stiff for that. They are quite stiff and really responsive – and like Flux tend to have a knack for, they still have decent board feel as well. The TMs are great for anyone who likes to bomb the mountain at speed. Out of the 11 freeride bindings that I rated:Ĭheck out the table below for the available sizes for the TMs. Rating Score: 89.2/100 Compared to other Freeride Bindings They must have their reasons for dropping it (most likely not selling how they would have liked) but a shame to see it dropped, IMO. Shame to see it go as it was a good performing binding at a good price for this flex range. NOTE: The 2019 model was the last model of the Flux TM, so this review will no longer be updated. In this review I will take a look at the TMs as freeride snowboard bindings.Īs per tradition here at I will give the TMs a score out of 100 (based on several factors) and see how they compare with other freeride bindings. |
